Founded in New York City in 2008 by songwriter Paul Basile and guitarist Patrick Hay, Great Elk emerged from Brooklyn's thriving indie scene with a sound that married expansive guitars, intimate songwriting, and atmospheric arrangements. The band's music occupies the space between quiet reflection and cathartic release.

Soon joined by bassist Tommy Harron, keyboardist Bryan Trenis, and drummers Adam Christgau, later Bryan Bisordi, Great Elk spent the next several years carving out a loyal following. The band released two full-length albums and two EPs while touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe, earning a reputation for immersive live performances and songs that balanced melancholy with hope.

The New Yorker once said, “The Brooklyn rockers Great Elk display the control and restraint of a band with deep chemistry, as they sway gracefully between gentle ballads and mid-tempo indie-rock tunes.”

In 2013 Basile left New York, first landing in Oregon and then the remote Alaskan community of Bethel. The realities of distance, careers, and growing families gradually brought the band's momentum to a close. An unofficial hiatus began in 2015.

In 2024, nearly a decade later, the band reunited to begin writing and recording together again. Their first new release, "All Yours," arrived in November 2024, revealing a band that had lost none of its chemistry. Now entering its next chapter, Great Elk returns with the same collaborative spirit that defined its earliest work—crafting richly layered indie rock that feels both familiar and newly earned.
